World Environment Day 2024: Pakistan’s Imperative

As Pakistan grapples with the challenges of a burgeoning population, economic growth, and climate change, World Environment Day 2024 serves as a stark reminder of the country’s precarious environmental trajectory.

Pakistan ranks among the top 10 countries affected by climate change, with devastating floods, droughts, and heatwaves becoming the new norm. The Indus River, our lifeline, is dwindling at an alarming rate, and our cities are choking under the weight of pollution.

The impact of plastic pollution is particularly alarming, with an estimated 55% of Pakistan’s waste comprising plastic materials. Our once-pristine mountains, rivers, and coastlines are now littered with plastic waste, threatening biodiversity and human health.

However, there is hope. Pakistan has taken steps towards a greener future, with initiatives like the Clean Green Pakistan movement and the establishment of national parks. But more needs to be done.

On this World Environment Day, we urge the government, civil society, and individuals to join forces to tackle Pakistan’s environmental challenges head-on. Let us work towards a future where our children can inherit a Pakistan that is clean, green, and thriving.

The time for action is now.
